Assignment # 33: Braid someone's hair

Miranda July’s assignment

I chose to do the assignment number 33 which is to braid someone’s hair. While doing this assignment I felt childish and weird. I hadn’t braided someone’s hair since I was maybe 13. At first I asked my sister if she would let me braid her hair, she refused because she said she had just straightened her hair and didn’t want to ruin it, but I finally convinced her by telling her how much fun it would be, just like when we were younger. It became apparent to me, when I visited the other website http://noonebelongsheremorethanyou.com why July was asking us to do these assignments. I think she wanted us to take ordinary tasks, or not ordinary, that we do and take the time to enjoy them and the giddy feeling we get. I believe it definitely re-conceptualizes what we consider art. Art is supposed to make us think, distract us – even if it’s just for a moment. It doesn’t necessarily need to be aesthetic like many people think. This website definitely distracted and intrigued me. Also, I think it’s a very original way of marketing her book, it definitely got me wanting to go find out more about this book.
